Production is usually split into four stages, and each one answers a different question. Writing and arranging decides what is played and in what order — the chords, the melody, the structure, which instrument enters where. Recording or programming decides how those parts get captured, whether that means a microphone in a room or notes drawn into a piano roll. Mixing decides how the captured parts sit against each other: what is loud, what is wide, what is bright, what gets out of the way of the vocal. Mastering decides how the finished mix behaves in the world — loud enough, tonally consistent with other records, translating across a phone speaker and a car and a club.
The distinction people most often blur is arrangement versus mixing, and it matters because they fail differently. If a track feels cluttered, that is usually an arrangement problem — too many parts playing at once — and no amount of EQ will fix it. If a track feels flat but the parts are right, that is a mix problem. Producers learn to ask which one they are looking at before reaching for a plugin.
What a music producer actually does
The word carries different meanings in different traditions, which is why the job description seems to shift depending on who you ask. In pop and rock, a producer has historically been closer to a director: they shape the performances, make the arrangement decisions, and are responsible for the record having a point of view. In hip hop, producer more often means the person who made the beat — the composer of the instrumental. In electronic music the producer usually is the artist, doing everything.
What unites them is responsibility for the finished sound. A producer decides what the record is trying to be and then makes the hundreds of small decisions that get it there: this take rather than that one, drums drier, second verse stripped back, cut the intro. That last category — subtraction — is most of the job. Records improve far more often by removing something than by adding.
Where AI generation fits into production now
Generative models compress the first two stages dramatically. A text prompt produces something arranged and performed, which used to require either playing the parts or programming them. What that changes is where your time goes: less on execution, more on judgement — deciding whether what came back is right, and knowing what to ask for instead when it is not.
The stages that do not compress are mixing and mastering, because those act on a finished stereo file that has already welded the decisions together. This is the practical reason stem export matters more than any other feature in a generator: stems give you the material back in a form the later stages can still work on. Without them, a generated track is take-it-or-leave-it.
The vocabulary is worth learning even if you never open a DAW, because it is also the vocabulary that makes prompts work. Asking for a track at 72 BPM with an uncluttered midrange and a sparse first verse is a production instruction, and it produces a measurably better result than asking for something chill.
