What Is Reverb? Meaning and How It Works

The textbook reverb definition — the persistence of sound after the source has stopped, produced by reflections off surfaces — is accurate but undersells how constant it is. Every sound you have heard outside of an anechoic chamber arrived with reverb attached, which is why a completely dry recording sounds unnatural and slightly unsettling. The brain uses those reflections to judge the size of a space and the distance to a source, so reverb is not decoration — it is spatial information.

It has three parts worth knowing. The direct sound arrives first. Early reflections — the first bounces off nearby surfaces — arrive within a few milliseconds and tell you how big the room is. The reverb tail is the dense wash that follows as reflections multiply, and its length is described by RT60: the time it takes to fall by 60 decibels. A small room might be 0.3 seconds; a cathedral can exceed 6.

The mixing decisions follow from that. More reverb pushes a sound further away, so it is the main tool for creating depth — vocals stay relatively dry to feel close, while a pad can sit far back. Pre-delay, the gap before the reverb starts, lets you keep a vocal intelligible while still placing it in a big space. And reverb accumulates: individually reasonable amounts on twelve tracks produce a mix that sounds like it was recorded in a swimming pool.

In generated music, reverb is usually baked into the stereo file and cannot be removed, so it is worth specifying up front. "Close, dry vocal" and "distant, cathedral reverb" produce fundamentally different records, and the difference is not something you can add later.

Why can I still hear the singer after using a vocal remover?

What is reverse reverb?

Reversing audio, adding reverb, then reversing the result — so the tail runs backwards into the note. It is the classic swelling pre-echo before a vocal entry.

Should podcast music have reverb?
